Many children have early difficulties with speech that go on to completely resolve in the first years of school. However, a subset of people continue to have difficulty with speech into adolescence and adulthood despite years of therapy. These errors, labeled “persistent” beyond 8-9 years of age, are often characterized by difficulty with a few select sounds (e.g. “ch”, “dj”), certain consonant combinations, and/or multisyllabic words.
With the right support, these difficulties can be overcome at any age. However, most people either did not receive the right kind of therapy or the right intensity to make the leap. Persistent articulation errors often require a listening component, a motor production component, specific feedback strategies, and frequent practice to make lasting change.
